Unblocking Newgrounds in China

As many of you might know Newgrounds cannot be accessed from China.

Newgrounds has probably been blocked because it features flash with excessive violence, porn and other content deemed unsuitable for Chinese public.

My idea is that China could unblock Newgrounds while filtering unwanted flash. Afterall here are a lot of movies which promote good messages. Newgrounds isnt only about porn and violence.

MINISTRY OF INFORMATION INDUSTRY
This ministry deals with a variety of issues including filtering of words and blocking of internet sites with unsuitable content.

Although I have found a page where you can report internet sites which should be blocked, I havent found a place where you could report what should be unblocked. However I have found an e-mail address where you can send your emails to. The person is in charge report-section. I think it is possible for him/her to unblock newgrounds if we can prove that here is valuable flash as well!

unfortunatley, it's pretty much violence and porn. i say we take it one step further and make a new section of newgrounds that doesn't have any of that. it's not just for china, little kids who are getting into flash gaming and would probobly enjoy user powered crap-filter. But even if they manage to find a group of games that aren't, well you know, the portal is still filled with... less than wholesome ads. please, even though my little sister can understand the vulgar crap, she will definitley avoid the site because it's just wrong. i don't want her to becaome another one of reality TV's mindless zombies.

I think we could manage flash not suitable for children by flagging it. It is also possible for China to filter what has to be blocked and what not. Tom could flag this kind of flash so that it doesnt appear in the search engines. (it could be accessed only through the "mature" portal)

I definitely agree that adolescents should be protected from certain content.

They can block anything. If they can block www.newgrounds.com, why shouldn't they be able to block http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/for um/4 ???

Anyways, you have to understand the situation first. Newgrounds is just one site. If there's questionable content on the site, they can block it if they want to. Why should the Chinese Government waste their time and money trying to filter out all of the "questionable" material on Newgrounds when they can just block it altogether? Why should the Chinese Gov't even care about Newgrounds, much less any other site that hosts flash animations?

Besides, porn and violence are featured all day everyday on NG. There isn't a single minute that goes by in which neither is featured.

"Chinese Government" isnt a faceless machine. There are people everywhere. Every organisation consists out of people.

All they have to do is remove newgrounds from the blocklist and type in words to filter newgrounds. This whole issue can be solved within 10 minutes by the administrator. And why they should do it? Because it's their job.

-NO MATTER WHAT YOU FEATURE, IT CAN BE FILTERED!
-SOMEONE SHOOTING SOMEONE ELSE ISNT EXCESSIVE VIOLOENCE. IF YOU SEE BLOOD SHOOTING TO ALL SIDES, THAT IS EXCESSIVE VIOLENCE.
-THEY WOULD CARE ABOUT NEWGROUNDS JUST LIKE THEY CARE ABOUT OTHER SITES. THEY HAVE A JOB AND IF THEY DID NOTHING, THEY WOULD BE BORED.

To afrodave- There are of all around Newgrounds, not only violence or porn like you say. One thing those people could do is make a filter to the sites from NG that have those pics

Actually, half the stuff on Newgrounds is considered illegal in China. Porn, Excessive, violence, basically ANYTHING that could possibly corrupt anything is illegal in China. Also, the amount of work that is required to only unblock certain content would be too much work for a Country like China.

However, when i was in China, newgrounds was accessible. How did you find out it was blocked?

The "illegal" stuff is maybe 20%. Most of flash are music videos, comedies, flash involving life and love...

I found out about this when Chinese friends couldnt access the links I gave them to show my flash.

I doubt they'd do it it not to important to them just one site some of the stuff here are considered shameful and also if you were to block web pages by the icon what if people started posting it as suitable for all ? or a rating that wasn't accurate.

I can see what your problem is and will do all I can to help. At the Sorbonne, we're expected to get involved with issues such as censorship and I feel that it is time for the Chinese government to receive a wake-up call regarding its censorship. It cannot hide what happened in 1989 forever.
