Happy October Revolution Day!

Posted by Kenzu Nov. 7, 2007 @ 2:24 PM EST

Today, the 7th November is the day of the Great Socialist Revolution, which happened in 1917 and resulted in the formation of USSR as well as strengthening of workers worldwide.

As workers became aware of the power they wield, when united, they were able to achieve more freedom and more rights.

October revolution proved that ordinary people can make a change, and the idea of socialism had such a strong power among workers that they were able to shape the governments and shift them left. Governments, which resisted becomming social-democracies were overthrown and replaced by socialist governments (some were democratic, while the majority were dictatorships).

Remember:

Freedom isn't free!
We have to fight for it!
Together!

And for those who can't wait for EU to place "aim to build socialism" in its constitution and vote for it in a new referendum:

Why fight for it when they can give it to us?

Nov. 7, 2007 | 3:08 PM Kenzu responds:

If you dont storm the streets, they wont give you anything. If they see huge masses, they will give in and give the people more freedom.

These days people are more clever, which means that politicians are clever enough to see when the situation is critical, and so they will give you what you want. Afterall they rather stay in office than feel the wrath of people. ^_^

While socialism is truly an amazing system of government, I think the USSR is a horrible example. It can barely even be considered socialist when you think of how much power Stalin and Lenin had, and then compare it to how much power the average worker was given. If you're going to promote communism, Russia is not a good example. Even though one could argue that Russia is even worse under capitalism, but that's another argument entirely.

Nov. 7, 2007 | 4:53 PM Kenzu responds:

Of course USSR wasn't perfect, because it was a socialist dictatorship, and we all know that democratic socialism is better.

Still, life in Imperial Russia was much worse than in Soviet Union, since Lenin gave people many rights. Stalin of course abused his power (and proved that he is a true reactionary, who was parasiting on the people). Nevertheless was USSR much better than most countries, because health care and education were freely accessible for everyone, all people were given a job according to their specialisation, because the right to have a job was guaranteed by the constitution. There were no homeless people, no unemployed people, and the state supported young talents.

East European contries were better, not only economically, but also politically and freedom of expression wasn't limited as much.

The best country in the world during 20th century was however Yugoslavia. It's sad how nationalism and opportunism tore it appart.
