unfortunatley, it's pretty much violence and porn. i say we take it one step further and make a new section of newgrounds that doesn't have any of that. it's not just for china, little kids who are getting into flash gaming and would probobly enjoy user powered crap-filter. But even if they manage to find a group of games that aren't, well you know, the portal is still filled with... less than wholesome ads. please, even though my little sister can understand the vulgar crap, she will definitley avoid the site because it's just wrong. i don't want her to becaome another one of reality TV's mindless zombies.

Anyways, you have to understand the situation first. Newgrounds is just one site. If there's questionable content on the site, they can block it if they want to. Why should the Chinese Government waste their time and money trying to filter out all of the "questionable" material on Newgrounds when they can just block it altogether? Why should the Chinese Gov't even care about Newgrounds, much less any other site that hosts flash animations?

You - All they have to do is remove newgrounds from the blocklist and type in words to filter newgrounds. This whole issue can be solved within 10 minutes by the administrator. And why they should do it? Because it's their job.

Unfortunately, I think this goes against all the tenets Newgrounds stands for. NG is a place of free speech, and its extreme shock value is what makes it what it is. True, while many flash authors such as yourself contribute in manners unlike the norm, the majority of flash here, at least the ones with the most publicity, often contain huge amounts of controversial material (the reason the Chinese government blocked it in the first place). But I digress...

The point is that Newgrounds is based around this, and has, well, lets call them authority issues. Although the Chinese government may allow limited access to Newgrounds, they're definitely going to need Tom's help, which (I hope) will be met with a resounding no. Albeit I admire socialist governments, I cannot say that I favor the removal of choice and the moral absolutism the Chinese government, and many other non-socialist governments for that matter, impose upon the citizenry. The Internet is a human achievement and should be outside of the control of any executive power, no matter what said powers believe pertaining to free speech.

Actually, half the stuff on Newgrounds is considered illegal in China. Porn, Excessive, violence, basically ANYTHING that could possibly corrupt anything is illegal in China. Also, the amount of work that is required to only unblock certain content would be too much work for a Country like China.

However, when i was in China, newgrounds was accessible. How did you find out it was blocked?

If they were really blocking it for excessive violence or porn, then they'd block Chinese websites that contain those things.

They are really blocking NG because it's western, and Chinese kids that view it might be corrupted (i.e. have their eyes opened) about certain things about the world the Chinese government doesn't want their people to know about.

I doubt they'd do it it not to important to them just one site some of the stuff here are considered shameful and also if you were to block web pages by the icon what if people started posting it as suitable for all ? or a rating that wasn't accurate.

I can see what your problem is and will do all I can to help. At the Sorbonne, we're expected to get involved with issues such as censorship and I feel that it is time for the Chinese government to receive a wake-up call regarding its censorship. It cannot hide what happened in 1989 forever.

I realize I'm sort of traveling back in time to reply to this, and nearly a couple of years back at that, but still:

What you proposed a year and a half ago in one response to a comment, Tom actively flagging things to not be displayed, would go against what Newgrounds stands for. Namely, the open and free sharing of ideas and art.

Other companies, like Google, are willing to do so because their primary purpose is to make money. Newgrounds' primary purpose, however, is not a matter of money. It is a matter of free communication of ideas, which is something the CPC does not want. And in all honesty, if Tom 'were' to follow through on your suggestion and start filtering the majority of what comes in into the "mature" section(which is currently reserved pretty specifically for hard-core porn), I'd stop using the site.

As far as asking the Chinese government to unblock the site and filter only certain animations? They either can't or won't. Why? Man-power. They would have to have someone sitting there twenty-four hours a day in order to view each and every animation in order to make sure only animations they deemed 'appropriate' made it through.

That's one person, twenty-four hours a day, dedicated 'solely to watching the Newgrounds Flash portal'. That's unrealistic.

As for your stating that certain 'ideas' should be blocked? No, they shouldn't. Just because you disagree with something does not mean it should be blocked. People believing one race or another is superior to another? It's their right to believe that, and their right to state it out loud.

The freedom to say whatever you like, to openly share your ideas, regardless of how deplorable others may find them to be, is one of the cornerstones of any genuinely free nation. After all, if the most basic human liberty is removed who's to say what will be taken away next?

Now, as far as child pornography? Literal, physical pornography of living children 'should' be, and in most nations 'is', outlawed. But there's a difference between that and racism/Nazi propoganda. What difference, you may ask?

Racism and Nazi propoganda are ideas. Thoughts. They are not physical entities. Child pornography, on the other hand, involves bringing direct physical and mental harm to a living, breathing child. It is not an idea, it is a physical action taken against a child who is likely too young to understand what's happening.

If you can't see the difference between a physical act and a thought, then may whatever God you happen to believe in have mercy on your soul.
